Crisis: Nusantara Capital

Advanced Committee

Nusantara, Indonesia’s planned new capital city in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, represents a bold effort to address the mounting challenges faced by Jakarta, including overpopulation, deforestation, flooding, and rising sea levels. Envisioned as a "Global City for All," Nusantara is intended to embody Indonesia’s future—integrating cultural diversity, promoting economic decentralization from Java, and reflecting inclusive, sustainable urban development. The Nusantara Capital Authority views this move as a transformative step toward building a new civilization rooted in innovation and collaboration. However, despite its ambitious goals, the success of Nusantara remains uncertain, as it faces the same risks that have doomed other large-scale capital relocation projects worldwide.

Chairs

Topic 1:

Countering Human Trafficking in Southeast Asia

This topic focuses on the persistent and complex issue of human trafficking in Southeast Asia, where porous borders, corruption, and economic disparities enable trafficking networks. Regional cooperation is key to dismantling these networks, improving victim protection, and ensuring justice. Discussions emphasize harmonizing laws, improving data sharing, strengthening border controls, and supporting survivors. Delegates are expected to explore both preventive measures and rehabilitation strategies while considering the diverse legal and cultural landscapes across ASEAN member states.

Topic 2:

Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development in Maritime Southeast Asia

Environmental justice in maritime Southeast Asia involves balancing economic growth with ecological preservation, especially for vulnerable coastal communities. The region faces threats such as climate change, rising sea levels, and resource exploitation. The focus is on promoting inclusive, sustainable development that protects marine biodiversity while respecting indigenous rights. Delegates will address policy coordination, enforcement of environmental laws, and financing sustainable initiatives, while ensuring that marginalized populations have a voice in environmental governance.
